$1,075 in Cash Prizes Awarded to
Lake Shore Web Design Finalists
Seventy-five teams, comprised of 98 young women from 15 area high schools, enrolled in the Michigan Council of Women in Technology’s annual web design contest this year. The theme, Survival: Lost in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, prompted Mrs. Candela’s web design students to create a website based on three items that would help them survive when lost outdoors. Sixteen students uploaded their websites successfully; Eleven advanced as finalists after 51 First Round judges, who are technology professionals from Ford Motor, MRM, Davenport University, GM, Onstar, Chrysler, Google, Michigan State University, HP, Acro, Compuware, Microsoft, and Group Associates, assessed their work. These finalists were Eva Smith, Mallory Burr, Jordan Kolodziejski, Chloe Jennings, Renee Alter, Victoria Vigliotti, Devinne Presley, Sarah McCarthy, Jackie Kwapisz, Dasha Jones, Alexia Ellison, and Hailey Lynch.
On Saturday, December 8, at Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Commons in Southfield, students presented their web sites, one at a time, to a panel of distinguished judges. Mrs. Candela said she was "impressed by the critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills that have been mastered by her students. Scantron tests simply do not replace these authentic experiences." In the advanced category, the two-person team of Jordan and Chloe placed second and earned $500 with their Disney-inspired website. Eva placed fourth and was awarded $75 for her site appropriately titled Little Red: Lost in the Woods. In the beginner category, Jackie placed first and earned $400 for Adventure is Out There site while Sarah McCarthy and Dasha Jones placed fourth and fifth respectively. Senior Jordan Kolodziejski commented, "This contest has taught me much more than how to create a website. It has taught me that if you're passionate about what you do then it will greatly improve the outcome of your work. So you have to find what you're passionate about and strive for it, whether it be web design or any other dream job."
Scott McNealy stated that technology has the shelf life of a banana. We must become lifelong learners within this career field. Luckily with help from the Michigan Council of Women in Technology, a group of knowledgeable mentors and selfless industry wizards, Mrs. Candela’s web students are ready to handle the technology challenges for tomorrow.
